Numerous population-based studies have found that food low in fats and cholesterol and high in fiber are associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers, diabetes, digestive complaints, and heart problems.

A dietary fiber rich diet plan may reduce overall risk of loss of life over a nine-year period, according to a new study. Soluble dietary fiber may help prevent loss of life from cardiac arrest, and well as respiratory related diseases and infections, the scientists say.

The scientists analyzed the diet plans of more than 219,000 men and 168,000 females who originally responded to a food study set of questions in 1995 and 1996. Those who ate the most amount of fiber (29.4 grams per day for men and 25.8 grams per day for women) were 22 % less likely to have passed away than those who ate the least amount of fiber over the same amount of time.

However, since high-fiber meals may also contain anti-oxidant natural vitamins, phyto chemicals, and other ingredients that may offer protection against these illnesses, scientists can’t say for certain that fiber alone is accountable for the decreased health hazards notices Joyce Saltsman, a nutritional expert with FDA’s Office of Food Labelling.


Are Fiber rich foods the Best Choice?

Some researchers believe that soluble fiber may slow down the growth of such cancer cells and tumors by combining with estrogen in the blood stream. This stops the unwanted oestrogen from being reabsorbed into the blood vessels.

Fiber has been shown to decrease levels of fat in the blood,

improve blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and improve bowel movements, the researchers said. Fiber is also thought to promote the excretion of carcinogen compounds.

Dietary fiber from grains had the strongest benefit in terms of reducing risk of loss of life in the study. But people should still get their fiber from fruits and vegetables and veggies as well.
